Sometimes the strangest things come out in class. One of the things we do with a new group of students is get them to fill out a questionnaire in English which asks such penetrating questions as ´What is your favourite ´pig-out´food ´and ´What kind of animal would you like to be if you could?´. Judging by some of the answers, some of the students are stuck in a dark and frightening place.
Anyway, one of the less screwy questions is ´What is your favourite childhood memory? I was interviewing a senior researcher for P and G who develops soap to be marketed all over the continent. He told me his favourite memory was swimming in the Apura river (near the Colombian border) with his brothers. Apparently their parents banned them from swimming in the river but they used to sneak out and do it anyway.
The river was considered dangerous because it was infested with piranhas. Undeterred, my brave student, in his 10 year old incarnation, got a canoe with some friends and turned it upside down, trapping air inside and getting into the river with it, pretending it was a submarine (I suppose this might just work if you actually tried it). After messing about in the water for a bit, they get out and right the canoe, only to find piranhas flopping about inside. They never went back, particularly when the clothes of another missing child were discovered abandoned on the riverbank some time later.
Apparently piranhas can reduce a cow to bones in about fifteen minutes. Nasty.

Well, Niall, you might hear unusual things in Venezuela but civilisation in France can be odd too. A recent newspaper report described the horrific tale of a farmer having to watch a flock of vultures killing one of his cows, starting with pecking out the eyes, of course. Vultures are a protected species in France, it seems. One has to ask why.
I understand from Seumus that he has sent you his monthly newsletter since he has given you a reference in it. You didn't reply to his blog message but he says to let you know that he doesn't easily take offence. His days of doing exciting things are now past and he is enjoying his retirement in sunny France. He, too, has perfected the art of doing only what is absolutely necessary. Even barking can be done from a position of lying flat out on your side and not having to lift your head. It does not really frighten intruders, either. But neither does it waste essential energy.
Glasgow hits Biarritz tomorrow (22nd June) with the arrival of the first guests for Aidan and Sandie's wedding. Your parents will follow next week. No doubt some news of the event(s) will reach you later.
Are piranhas edible ? Wouldn't it be fair if we could eat them for a change ? Piranhas and chips anyone?
On second thoughts.... maybe not!
But maybe nae worse than 'moules et frites'?
Hi matey,
Have linked to your blog from mine (which has been resurrected after a hiatus).

Hi Moira
I don´t always reply to blog messages unless I have something witty to say. Which is rare.
But do thank Seumus for me.
Hope the wedding is a lot of fun.
Rob - thanks!
